Re: [RC] Spring Weather - and Earthquakes - Lynne Glazer

Man, that is nearly word for word my quake speech to friends outside of CA. I add that people should consider reading about paleoseismology. The Alaskan quakes were pretty bad, and they just rebuilt without changing codes.

Umm... about those earthquakes.

We here in California don't have even one earthquake in the Top Ten for the United States while the Mississippi River Valley garners not one spot but TWO! And it's ONLY two because they lump the FIVE 8.0+ quakes together to make just two.

Furthermore, due to the differences in geology, the range of those earthquakes far outstrips those here in California. The great 1906 San Francisco quake was felt as far away as the middle of Nevada (350 miles) while the New Madrid quake of 1811 rang church bells in Boston (1000 miles).

And did you know that the probability of a 6 to 7 point quake reoccurring in the Mississippi River Valley in the next 50 years is 90%... THAT IS NINETY PER CENT. We here in California build to codes in anticipation of earthquakes; in the mid-West... nada. When the big ones come a-knocking, you guys, especially Memphis to St Louis, are going to be S-O-L!

So if it's earthquakes that have you rattled, maybe you'd best come out West where we are taking steps to mitigate the death and destruction :)

Angie at the GA/TN/AL line...where the temps are back up and there's never a threat of earthquakes, wildfires, mountain lions, grizzlies, Charles Manson........... :-))
