Re: RE: [RC] Corn Oil - recklessheartranch

I don't think corn oil has any more cals than any other pure fat. A gram of fat
is a gram of fat, calorie-wise.

The only difference (my understanding) between corn oil and something like rice
bran is that rice bran has a high fat content, but corn oil is 100% fat,
therefore has more cals.

Is this right?

The only negative reference, I have read as of late, to corn oil in the
horses diet are the calories it contains!

Cite the article that proclaimed corn oil is HARMFUL. Without that,
there is no way for us to evaluate the quality of the information.
However...

While it is true that horses do not have a gall bladder, they do not
need one to process oils. So feeding corn oil, or any other oil for
that matter, will contribute to weight gain as the fats will be
emulsified by bile that is more or less continuously excreted in horses.
Feeding corn oil over other oils may contribute more "heat"... or not...
than other oils. It is certainly one of the most economical oils and is
widely available. It has little nutritive value so should not REPLACE
anything, just be used for additional weight gain.

Harmful? I'm not from Missouri, but "Show me". :)

I have been using corn oil for weight on my horses for
years when needed. I recently read in a magazine that
this is harmful as the horse does not have a gall
bladder to digest the oil.
