Subject: [RC] pawing

Anyone have any suggestions on how to stop a horse from pawing in his stall and digging craters?...

The saddleseat show horse people--who never turn a horse in
training out--use "kicking chains" to stop horses from pawing
in the stall.  This is an 18" length of heavy chain attached to
a padded ankle strap.  If the horse tries to paw, he whacks himself
in the leg with the chain.  (As the name implies, they also work
to prevent a horse kicking the side of his stall.)  Works, though
it's kind of pathetic to see.  See item #B 913 on page 8 of the
the LaSalle Harness online catalog at:

I used a variant--a shorter, lighter chain on a padded cuff
attached above the mare's knee--to break my mare of pawing
while tied to a trailer.
