[RC] charging dogs - Dot Wiggins

There are several things you can do if dogs come into the road after you or your mount.

If your horse will do it----Turn to face the dog and charge it. Yell, "Back" "Go Home", what ever (profanity may help) Most horses won't step on the dog, unfortunately, but I've had a couple that would sure try.
If you and the horse are any kind of "cowboy", take a 20 ft hard twist rope with knots in the end(or a lariat with honda) and charge the dog spinning the rope in a vertical spin to the horse's side. You can reach out a ways, believe me if you can connect that dog will be quite respectful next time you come by. Makes no noise, leaves no marks on the dog. Practice at home first, it's pretty easy.
If these don't work get a kid's "Super Soaker" squirt gun, load it with water, or vinegar, or dish soap, any number of things will work. If it's really bad, use ammonia. I've not seen many horses bothered by the squirt guns, but practice at home.
This is likely the best if there is more than one dog, you have ammo enough for a bunch of shots.

Don't wait till the dog is starting to get close enough to grab the tail or bite. I've seen horses and riders badly hurt in the wrecks caused by aggressive dogs.

If the dog is out side it's yard, on the road or on a public trail it's fair game.
