Most over here are saying that they have figured out the metabolics, they
know to train for the cardio-muscular effort of long races. The lamenesses
are the main problem now. Personally - I don't think the horse is designed
to maintain those speeds for those distances. Yes, they can go fast. Yes,
they can go far. They have evolved for just such capabilities. But fast AND
far...? I don't think there was ever a Darwinian need to outrun a predator
for 100 miles...
