Re: [RC] snakes - Truman Prevatt

I've lived in FL for 20 years. I've seen three rattle snakes and one cotton mouth. Oh we have them - they don't like you any more than you like them. A six foot eastern diamond back doesn't get to be six feet by showing himself off to people.

All three rattlers I saw were when I was on horseback. One I came around a curve at a walk. He was 20 feet in front of us. I stopped - he left. Another I almost trotted over but I pulled my horse up in time. He just stayed there sleeping as I went around. The third was more interesting. I come around the corner and cantered over this log. Well I noticed that that log had a whole bunch of rattles on it's tail. He was as big around as my calf - I thought it was a small log. My horse must have stepped on him because when my wife went over him he was threshing. I expect he crawled off and died.

The cotton mouth was about the same - except my wife cantered over him first. I managed to stop and he was long gone. I just don't worry about them. They are there - but I leave them along and they leave me alone. As far as barns, Eastern diamond backs don't like to hang around people. I've never seen a snake around my barn here. The cats, dogs, hawks and eagles may have something to do with that.

We don't have copperheads in Florida - except maybe the extreme northern parts. But growing up in Kentucky I can tell you copperheads like to hang around stables, barns and houses. We used to catch king snakes and put them in the barns to keep the copperheads away. On the other hand I've seen a lot of copperheads but only had one incident with one and that was my fault I happened to kick one as I waked across the field in waist high grass.

I hate snakes too. We are looking for retirement
property and that is the one thing I research about
each place considered. Well this week during the
horrible snow storm here in Michigan we were coming
back from the barn fighting the blowing snow all the
way and my husband shouts "We wouldnt want to live in
north Florida cause we might see a snake!!!' He has a
point so I would like to here from those who ride in
the woods in the south about the snakes there and if I
really should be worried. Also how about in the
barns?pattie h
