Re: [RC] Starting the middle aged horse in distance riding - Truman Prevatt

Kim,

My old mare did not really start till 10. She had done a CRT or two when she was 8 but I bred her and by the time we got back to it she was 10. She did fine. She had about 1800 endurance miles when I retired her at 15 since I wanted to breed her again. Of those 600 were 100's.

The good thing about older horses is you are not starting completely from scratch with tendons and ligaments. These will be a lot tougher than they would be on a 4 yo.

Hi everyone,

How many have you started an already broke 10 year old or older horse for distance riding and how long did the horse hold up for you? How many miles and competitive years were you able to achieve with the horse?

Thanks so much.

Kim
