[RC] Kicking Horses, First time is ugh! - LinLaurFarms

I have been in the breeding business for 35 years and seen plenty. My mares and babies went out during the day together and then I would bring them in every evening. One mare bit the other mare when I was bringing them in and while I watched she kicked at the other mare and hit the rear leg of the 3 day old colt.

Snap like a twig........, I was alone with 4 mares and babies and trying to separate them and help the foal at the same time. My dad still likes to keep all the mares separate. So for this reason I consider each horse a kicker.

I used to put a red ribbon on my mares at every ride just to keep people off my butt......., yes some people just ride to close. But, then you would get the panic people in the vet check, "you should keep her back if she will kick", so I  got over it.  Any horse can be a kicker when they get good and ready sometimes it is just the way they respond to that particular horse or situation.

It is a horses normal reaction to fight or flight. You never know how they will react or behave in any one particular moment.
