Re: [RC] kicking death - Beth Walker

I will second this - in spades.

I lost my previous horse, Shadow, whom I had for his entire 25 years, to a kick by a bad-tempered mare. It was a forearm fracture too. I had no idea the mare was a kicker. The situation was not that unique -- we were riding in a group, and Shadow was at the back. The group was cantering, the leader went around a curve, and pulled up (lunch spot). However, there was no warning, so when we cantered around the curve, here was the whole group of horses -- stopped. We pulled up as soon as we could, but we were very close to the horse in front of us -- the mare.

Since I had no idea the mare was a kicker, I wasn't as fast as I could have been. I sat there a moment trying to figure out which way was best to move: to the side, or back up. Before I did -- wham. Butterfly fracture of the radius, which fractured all the way through one week later, and I lost my Shadow.

If the mare had had a red ribbon, I'm pretty sure I would have done an immediate back up to get out of range.

Kicking is anti social in any situation. If you even think your horse is

Thank you.
