[RC] Following too close (was you should) - Beth Walker

OK - so from the other perspective - I understand the argument that you shouldn't let your horse run up the butt of the horse in front. However, that is sometimes easier said than done. Anybody have any good suggestions for how to teach a horse to follow at a reasonable distance?

My specific problem is that my fellow tends to be ... motivated ... in a group. He will go behind, but he wants to follow about 1 foot behind the other horses' butt. If I back him off, the second I release the reins, he surges forward. I can catch him again, and back him off again, but it then becomes constant: pull - release - surge - repeat. If I "pop" him with the reins (hackamore), I can get him to back off for about 2 seconds, then he is back on their butt. Same deal - I don't want to constantly be banging on his nose.

One technique I have heard of is for the rider in **front** to carry a long whip, and smack him with it when he gets too close. Anybody heard of this one?
