[RC] Can you say "beer?" (was: New endurance concept) - k s swigart

Paul Sidio said:

NASCAR.... A bunch of cars go around and
around the same track for 500 miles. How can
you tell who is winning? They get lapped by
each other, take pit stops... Boring!! It is noisy
and smelly! It will never catch on..:) Who would
want to watch that? Not me, but somehow a few
hundred thousand folks show up at a track just
about every week to watch. I hear they even
show it on TV every once and while. Not too
shabby for what started out as a bunch of moonshine
running Good Old Boys running dirt roads in their
souped up hot rods.

People do not go to NASCAR races to watch cars go aroudn the same track
for 500 miles (even though that doesn't take 10 hours, like a 100 mile
endurance ride would); they go for the social event.

The only way to make such a thing interesting with respect to endurance
riding would be if there was something ELSE going on as well....and it
would help if alchohol were involved.

Rest assured, people would not come just to watch a bunch of horses go
around a 1 mile track 100 times at excruciatingly slow speeds.

Arabian flat track racing is going the way of the dodo because it is
excruciatingly boring to watch slow arabians running 6-8 furlong races
at their top speeds, even with the added "entertainment" of being
allowed to bet on the outcome. People would rather watch quarter horse
races (which are over in 20 seconds) or TB races where if the horses
have to go all the way around the track it isn't like watching molasses,
but even longer TB races are going the way of the dodo. The only reason
they still exist is that they are "classics" and people have an
irrational fondness for tradition.

People also have a bit of a fondness for novelty as well, so you may get
SOME interest in such an endurance ride in its early stages, but novelty
quickly wears off and there is a long time between novelty and tradition
where there has to be some kind of real interest in the event itself.
