Does anyone use lunging as a means of keeping their horses 
conditioned when> they can't ride as much as they'd like to 

I'd buy a treadmill first and get the horse a television to watch. :-P  I
have known an endurance rider who made her horse tie up lunging it.
People often forget to walk the horse 15 min. first when they lunge. I
really don't get any use out of it except to check for soundness. Can't
imagine lunging for an hour.

I did know a woman who tied her horse to the bumper of her truck and
drove all over her dairy farm with her small children riding in the truck
with her when she didn't have a sitter. :-)
