Re: [RC] Really wide-backed horse and saddle fit - desertrydr1

Some people feel that the wide backed horses do well in treeless saddles.  I haave used Wintecs for years before I got my Arabian Saddle CO. Solstice, which I used, depending on the horse, for a number of years also.  When I got my mule, I was pretty sure that none of my saddles, either the Solstice or Wintec (I own 4 of them) would fit, since I put them on her when she was about 3 with no luck.  That got me started looking at treeless saddles, and I now own 3 of them, a Torsion, which fit the mule okay, a Sensation, which I really liked, but which gave me hip problems, and a Freeform, which I got just days before the mare I bought it for died.

There are a lot of factors that go into saddle fit, and the bad thing is just about the time you fined a treed saddle that works, the horse gets fitter, changes shape slightly, and you start all over again.  That doesn't happen as much with treeless saddles.

If you are really interested in only a treed saddle, the Duett is very wide, and seems ot fit a lot of wider horses quite well according to their owners.

If you are at all interested in treeless saddles, the best place to find info is at the treeless saddle group on yahoo, which was started and is maintained by a Ridecamp member.  treelesssaddles@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Subject: [RC] Really wide-backed horse and saddle fit

I have purchased an Arab/Saddlebred gelding, 15 1/2H, who has a really broad back (and I mean "really" broad), although he does have a nice wither.  He is not in endurance condition, but I hope to have him in easy 50-milers by mid-summer.  My dilemna in the meantime is what saddle to use (despite the fact that we probably own at least 10 saddles from western to dressage to aussie to endurance!)?  I don't really think any of the saddles we presently own will fit him very well, although I am considering starting him in the adjustable gullet Wintec Dressage to start (and I know the drawbacks there) until he is ready for some serious mileage.  I would really like to avoid that whole, huge, messy saddle fit problem if at all possible.  It is very hard to figure out what ones will work well once you start heading up into bigger mileage ie: Reactor Panel, Synergist, etc., so   I'm trying to avoid spending thousands and thousands of dollars on saddles that just won't work for endurance, even if the ads claim they will.  Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated - you can e-mail me directly if you like to avoid problems with too many saddle discussions on Ridecamp.  Thank you.
