Gore-Tex is great stuff.  I had the good fortune to examine some when Bill Gore was first getting into the market.
 
My only reservation is that it is sensitive to oily dirt.  Early backpacker gear allowed the Gore-Tex to rest on the skin, if a shirt was not worn under it.  The users found that after a few rainstorms, the skin oils killed it.  At the time washing didn't solve the problem because usually soap/detergent residues did the same thing.  The solution was to rinse the raincoat a couple of times in denatured ethanol.
