[RC] Chips and Ringers - k s swigart

Ed Hauser said about ID microchips:

*It is possible to crush them, or remove them
and then insert a new one thus changing the ID
of the animal. Since the number put in by the
manufacturer can not be changed, a horse could
have a new ID, but you could not give a ringer
horse the ID of another.

This assumes that the only place to get an ID microchip is from "the
manufacturer."

You want to ID a "ringer" with a duplicate ID numbered chip, you just
have to find a way to get a chip with the same number from somewhere
else (I cannot believe that there is only one manufacturer in the whole
world who can make the things).

If this becomes a really prevalent way of identifying ... well ... just
about everything, I can guarantee you that some bootleg operation will
start making "duplicate" identification chips. In fact, it wouldn't
surprise me if such a thing already exists.
