Yes, Barbara is right in my experience, but I have another related question.

I am feeding two young Icelandic mares now, aone coming five and the second
four inext May..  They get one flake of good grass hay in the morning and
another in the evening. The one we're riding looks pretty good.  The younger
one is fat on that much feed.

Does anyone doing distance with ponies  feel they need to supplement when
they are working?
