I called Dr. Trish Dowling DVM, MSc, DACVIM & DACVCP (all those letters means she is the drug doctor) and she said the toxicity is dose related. It is best to not be cheap and buy the right stuff for your dogs.
Nothing makes vets madder then calling them in the middle of the night because you overdosed your dog with something you bought at the feed store.

Ivermectin is actually what they use for heartworm medication in dogs, though at different concentration/dosages.  It is supposedly bad for dogs that have collie in them due to a mutation.
