If I remember my history correctly:

100+ years ago feeding large amounts of cheap tobacco to animals was used for worming. They had special "balling guns" to force the plug into the stomach. The idea was that if it did not kill the animal, the nicotine in the tobacco would kill the worms.

Nicotine, while a natural plant product, is extremely toxic. It is actually much more toxic and dangerous than modern "chemical" wormers or insecticides. (It is made by the tobacco plant to kill attacking insects.)
