Re: [RC] Myths - Bruce Weary - Truman Prevatt

Peter,

The HWC committee could do an easy quick and dirty. I assume the HWC has statistics for all the treatments over the past few years. Prioritize those treatments into three categories, minor metabolic, major metabolic and accidents (rider falls off - horse runs into fence, etc.).

Break the treatments into distances categories - LD, 50 to 95 and 100. Then take from the database the total number of starts in those categories - both nationally and regionally. Then calculate the percentages of LD treatments in each treatment category, 50 mile treatments, etc. Do this nationally and regionally.

You can do more but this simple number should be quick and dirty to calculate and provide some very relevant information. If they want to send me the treatment data - with the rider name redacted of course I will be happy to do it.

The best way to expose myths is to simply run the numbers. As Richard Feynman was fond of saying - "Shut up and calculate."

Bruce,

We are all speculating.

It would be very interesting to see the statistics on
the horses that have require treatment.

I'm sure the Horse Welfare Committee maintains records
on how may horses require treatment every year. Truman or someone else goo with numbers should be able
to correlate the riders name with their AERC record,
ride distance, region or etc. I've seen similar
analysis on the pull rates by distance and region.

This would put to rest the argument about if LD riders
are more or less responsible that endurance riders.

Regards, Pete
