Re: [RC] Electrolyte muffins - Buzzard's Roost

We each had 6 of the muffins.  I don't know why I added Tums to the muffins, it just seemed like a good idea at the time.  Sometimes I let him snack on Tums, so I was just putting all of his snacks in one convenient package.  I didn't know it takes more PnW... I thought one dose was one ounce, so 2 muffins.  I did some syringe dosing too, with Lyte Now, starting on Thursday thru Friday night, then I switched to the muffins. I was just trying the muffins out.  I thought it would be good to elyte him with food for the added gut movement.  I also had some PnW mixed with water in a squirt bottle, but never used that.
I definitely wish that I had remembered alfalfa, that just slipped my mind, lesson learned.  From listening to everyone's ideas, I'm really thinking that nutrition had as much to do with our pull as conditioning (& the weather & the trailering), so the food plan is definitely on my To Figure Out list.  I really don't have any set in stone reasons why I'm doing or not doing anything at this point.  Tabula rosa, that's me!  Actually, I feel more like the blind pig rootin' around for its acorn, so thanks for taking time out of your day to pity a poor old blind pig & nudge some acorns under my nose!

Now what's this about yogurt?  Yogurt is good???

Hey Susan,
Just trying to think of something that could have made a difference for your horse. How many of these muffins are you certain your horse ate during the ride? Why add Tums to Perform 'n Win? I think a "dose" of my homemade electrolytes is 2-OZ. So for 12 muffins to have 1/2 dose would require 12-oz. of mine. From what I understand you have to double the dose for Perform n' win since it has so much other stuff in there...so for a muffin to have 1/2 dose would it not take 4 times more Perform 'n Win (24 oz) instead of 6? You mentioned that you didn't feed Alfalfa which is another good source of calcium. If I'm right on this it could have made a difference in your horse's ability to utilize energy.

Is there a reason you don't want to just dose your electrolytes? I know people on here have downed that a lot on RC, but I have a hard time worrying about that when our horse is eating great and showing lots of go with no big deal made of it.
