Re: [RC] [RC] Be part of the solution! - Ranelle Rubin

What if there were an incentive to ride with a mentor..like half price entry..double points, something..!?!

I don't know what the solution is, but I do know there is one, and as part of this organization, we are bound ethically and morally to protect these horses.

I like this suggestion; make riding with a mentor your first ride (first 3 rides...?) mandatory. That would help the new (to the sport) rider learn and be a step in the right direction.

However, there is no cure for STUPID! Spurring a horse to make it go is abuse. Spurs, especially spurs that jingle jangle jingle and would make good pizza cutters, are often a piece of ego jewelry. I ride with spurs on the horses that need them and I don't leave marks. Spurs have their place so don't get defensive with me here. I'm just pointing out that some people will make mistakes and some are just egomaniacs. Egomaniacs can't be educated because they already know it all. You can't beat sense into them.

The HWC is not a legal agency. They have no teeth with non-AERC members. Furthermore, they have no teeth with AERC members who will ride stupid and don't give a rip about consequences. The end result is the same; an innocent equine is hurt or even killed.

Let's focus on the problem and become part of the solution. The HWC is only a part of the solution. Mentors are an important part of the solution. AERC and her members are part of the solution. Riders willing to learn and set egos aside for the welfare of the horse are an integral part of the solution.

I, for one, would welcome the opportunity to mentor folks through their
first rides. I have two ladies I am currently coaching, and I am having a
blast.
