Specific to California -- it is not a "shall issue" state for  
concealed carry.  Concealed carry permits are issued by the local  
sheriff in most counties, with some counties being 'easy', and others  
impossible.   In San Diego and LA counties ... good luck.  I gave up  
quite a while ago.  "Personal Protection" is not a sufficient reason  
for granting a CCW license in those counties ...

As far as open carry is concerned -- I'm not up on those laws, but I  
**think** the permit is the same -- it is a "license to carry", and  
the sheriff grants whether it is open or concealed carry.

The reason you can carry in a campsite is that it becomes your  
temporary "home".  I doubt (not a lawyer here, so don't take this as  
authoritative) that you can carry on a trail without a CCW permit.
