Re: [RC] Speaking of - Beth Walker

Specific to California -- it is not a "shall issue" state for concealed carry. Concealed carry permits are issued by the local sheriff in most counties, with some counties being 'easy', and others impossible. In San Diego and LA counties ... good luck. I gave up quite a while ago. "Personal Protection" is not a sufficient reason for granting a CCW license in those counties ...

As far as open carry is concerned -- I'm not up on those laws, but I **think** the permit is the same -- it is a "license to carry", and the sheriff grants whether it is open or concealed carry.

The reason you can carry in a campsite is that it becomes your temporary "home". I doubt (not a lawyer here, so don't take this as authoritative) that you can carry on a trail without a CCW permit.

You are entitlede to carry a gun as long as you have a proper license.
However, unless that license is for a concealed weapon, it should be carried
in plain sight of everyone.

Speaking of packing heat. What is the law in California concerning carrying
a loaded gun on trails. I find that it's ok in a campsite, on private
property or where guns are ok to fire but nothing about hiking or riding
horseback on a trail.

That's a problem. With a shoulder holster you could end up with broken
ribs. With a belt holster a banged up hip. With a back holster I'd hate
to thing of what you could end up with.

That's why I carry mine in my teeth. That way it always close at hand.
If my horse won't stop, it serves as brakes. And the biggest reason if
my horse decides to play yard darts I just spit it the other way and
won't land on it ;-) .

Just something to think about ... A long time ago, I rode with a
fellow that packed heat for a while. He stopped after he came off his
horse and had a huge bruise that practically put him in bed for a
week from landing on the gun. He carried his in a holster on his hip.
