Our shale ridges at 1600 - 2000 ft. elevation are made of mud sediment.? Also, we know of a?ridge at probably 1400-1600 ft. elevation that has rounded rocks.? A local man, a geology expert, told my husband that those rocks were once in a river and that gold was found there.? Fascinating.....

If you ever get a chance to ride near Lopez Lake or in Ranchita estates, both inland near Arroyo Grande, a roller coaster-like jeep road trail keeps going through chalky sections filled with these annoying loose "rocks" that the horses tend to slip on. I was riding with a geologist friend and she decided to dismount to take a closer look at one of the rocks --- and discovered that they were actually giant fossilized oysters! The chalky marine sediment oyster bed had apparently been folded by subsequent geologic activity and the trail just goes up and down the folds.
