This is the same method I used with my guys, very successfully!  It's all about being consistent.  I also found that is helped to do this while riding with other horses that were moving out a little bit faster than my guy.  If the other horses were a lot faster than he would get frusterated and want to trot to catch up.

Michelle, I forgot to mention this method, too. I also used it, and it does
help a whole lot. You get used to bumping in synchronization with the
horse's footsteps and it becomes quite rhythmic.
