RE: [RC] Ground Control Horseshoes - Karen Standefer

I used Ground Controls on several horses in the past. They were ok with
some, not ok with others (if the foot flares, they didn't give enough
support).

I have switched to Epona Shoes and like them MUCH better. They are harder
material, so they don't "extrude" under load/wear. They hold their shape,
they have better breakover all the way around the hoof, they have different
hardnesses of materials for different parts of the foot (softer around the
edges where the sole would touch and also softer around the frog area).
They have a metal stay in the front of the shoe where the nails go which
help to stabilize the shoe and keep the nails in place. They don't take any
special nailing or clinching tools. They come in more varied sizes and
configurations than the Ground Controls (mesh covering the hole in the
center or open, metal studs for traction and longer wear).

My horse that is shoe/boot challenged does great in them. They really
stimulate the back of his hoof and they don't promote flaring like the
Ground Controls did.

I shoe my own horses and the Epona Shoes are much easier to apply, even for
a rookie shoer :-)

Subject: [RC] Ground Control Horseshoes

I have been thinking about trying the Ground Control Shoes on one of my
mares. I have to ride on mostly gravel roads and I worry about the
concussion and stress from the hard ground. I was wondering if anyone
uses or has tried these shoes and how they worked or didn't for you? Did
you use them only on the front or all four? How long did they last and
how difficult was it for your farrier to put them on and take them back
off? How did the horse respond to the different feel?
Thanks
