[RC] Race brain and bits - Ranelle Rubin

Kathy,

Every horse is different in how they respond to the S-Hack. I personally have used an S-Hack for years with great result. There are two reasons I now use a bit on Fellow. The first has to do with his tripping issue. With the S-hack, when he got excited (race brain), he would put his head up in the air to avoid the pressure of the hack. Two things this caused were body out of frame, and he was no longer watching where he was going.

By putting him back in a snaffle (Myler L2-3 41PB with Kimberwick cheekpiece is what I bought on the recommendation of the Myler rep I spent time with at Horse Expo), he is now relaxed at the poll, easy to keep in frame, (his back is up, his hind-quarters are underneath him nicely with just a bit of collection when asked to move into the bit), and with his head in the correct position, he now can watch the ground, and does.

Could this be achieved with any bit? Likely by someone who was a better rider than I, yes. Does it make it easy for me to get him where I want him safely and with the most comfort for both of us? You Bet! I was amazed at how calm and in control he was at the start of Tevis.

Happy Trails!

I'm curious why you want to keep them in a snaffle? I ride in a Little S
Hackamore for the ease in eating and drinking, is that the reason for
the sidepull? I've read that the snaffle is not necessarily the kindest
bit even though it is generally used to begin teaching the horses. Maybe
someone with more knowledge can speak up here.

I think he has the potential for race brain though. The other gelding I just started riding again after a layoff and have a snaffle on him. He is not so easy or sensitive. What is better, keeping a snaffle but risking putting him in circles even during conditioning rides or to change bits?
