Re: [RC] To Angie re:Double R saddles - rides2far

Big Horn and Double R are one and the same. Same building here in
Chattanooga, they just started using the Big Horn name all the time.
American Saddlery is right across the road. They make the cheaper
versions with slightly less dependable materials that are sold through
some of the discount catalogs. They're made on the same #800 tree (for
15" seat) last time I compared. You can get good ones or occasionally
get one that the leather may curl on because they put the pattern the
wrong direction on the hide to get more cuts. (at least that's what I was
told was the reason). Crates is right across town. They're known at the
highest quality but since it was much harder to find someone to get you a
"local discount" I really don't have any experience with them. Sometimes
what they consider "high quality" just means thicker leather and it gets
heavier for no good reason. They pretty much cut out all local sales
unless you go through a regular distributor so no more cheap local
versions because somebody's aunt worked there. I used to be able to get
one for something like $400 but since I don't like the stirrup
positioning anyway it didn't help me any. I've never talked to anyone at
their factories that has ever seen one of their saddles on a real live
horse to see how it looks. Some people like them so they're good saddles
for them & their horses but they're not in any way interested in refining
anything about them. I heard Sharon Saare was very upset and considered
their design as a rip off of hers...but then some think that the
Abercrombie Triple T came before that. I guess everything is just taking
an idea and refining it further...except maybe they didn't refine any
more at Big Horn. >g<

Hi Angie, I have to reply on list, as I can't find
your email addy. Are there still Double R endurance
saddles available? I had one years ago that was
stolen out of my trailer, I wanted a replacement but,
I was told the company was out of business. I was
lucky enough to get one that was made right after
Double R manufactured saddles for Sharon Saare and
they had quit doing business with each other, but were
still making Sharon Saare clones.. I loved that
saddle!
Please tell me I might be able to find another one to
love.. I've been so lonely... LOL
