RE: [RC] Vaccines question - Susan E. Garlinghouse, DVM

Anybody know if the "year past the expiration date" statement is true?

I'll throw them in the trash in a hot second if I'm risking my horses'
health.

But if they're perfectly good......?

You're not risking your horse's health by using expired vaccines, as in they
won't cause any actual harm, they just may not be as effective as fresher
product. Also, since Innovator has to be refrigerated, keep in mind that it
can happen that the product wasn't always handled by someone that understood
clearly about the need for refrigeration. I've seen vaccines sitting on a
back room shelf, which the counter help explained was where they kept it
because otherwise there wasn't room in the frig for everyone's lunch, and it
was okay because no customers had ever complained. :-/

Anyway, you're probably okay, and will get 'sufficient' immune response,
maybe just not totally maximal. I couldn't use expired vaccines in my
clinic for clients, but use the leftovers on my own animals all the time,
usually do titers for fun every year or two, and they're always at
protective levels.
