[RC] Vaccines question - Jennifer Fleet

Hi all,

This isn't exactly endurance related, but in a way it is.....don't want to have sick horses at rides...or at all.... :)

My question is regarding expired vaccines. A friend of mine is close friends with the owner of a local feed store. The feed store is closing down, and the owner was going through inventory for her final sale and found some Ft. Dodge vaccines (Flu-vac Innovator) in her refridgerator that had not been sold. They have an April '07 expiration date. That's six months ago.

The owner gave them to my friend for free (can't sell them if they're expired) and said that they are actually still good for about a year past the expiration date. My friend said she called Ft. Dodge and the girl there said that was true, but they weren't supposed to say that to customers.

She has offered them to me, since my horses are due for shots. I have the vet coming Tuesday for all shots, teeth, etc. I would still need the vet to give West Nile and Rabies. If I used these free ones for the other stuff, it would help my pocketbook. However, I'm not sure I feel comfortable giving expired vaccines.

Anybody know if the "year past the expiration date" statement is true?

I'll throw them in the trash in a hot second if I'm risking my horses' health.

But if they're perfectly good......?

Thanks,
Jennifer
