Re: [RC] Navajo Lady--The Rest of the Story - Karen Sullivan

Wow! One, very cute horse! Tell her owner she has something special! From
her
color, she looks more grulla, than buckskin; one of my favorite colors! My
mustang
mare is also grulla, with two tone mane, dorsal strips and leg barring...

Subject: [RC] Navajo Lady--The Rest of the Story

I just ran out and shot these current pictures of Navajo Lady. These
photos don't do her justice. She is a spectacular looking animal! I took
the liberty of re-posting the "before" pictures as well. That's my 17
year-old daughter (the one who insisted we bring the horse home)
pictured with Lady's owner, Mrs. Lauer. She is now a bona fide cancer
survivor, and is enamored with Lady.
It turns out there is more to her story. About two months ago, at the
first episode of cold weather here, Navajo Lady may not have drank
enough water, and she was throwing herself to the ground in pain. The
vet came out and performed standard colic treatment, after which Mrs.
Lauer spent three nights in the barn in single digit weather, and with
no heater, nursing the horse. She continued to fail, and was taken to
the veterinary hospital, where she spent an additional three days on
IV's and intensive care. The vet called at one point and said she
wouldn't make it through the night. But, she did. A few prayers and
agonizing hours later, Navajo Lady made a turn for the better, and
recovered completely.
I continue to be impressed with the toughness and fragility of
horses, and the lengths some people will go to preserve and protect
them. At any rate, my daughter will have a great story to tell my
grandchildren--someday. Dr Q, who is WAY too young to be a grandfather
