[RC] teaching a horse to trot out at a vet check. - Nina Vasiliev

Hello,

I practice at home. I stand at his left shoulder, facing forward, holding the
lead with both hands. I warn the horse that we are going to trot out by
saying, "And...TROT!" then I take off running. If the horse lags behind, I
(without looking at him or slowing,) swing the end of the lead around and
behind my body with my left hand and pop him with it. I use a 12 foot lead
rope and it has enough length and weight to allow me to flick him.

It doesn't take many times to teach the horse that you are asking for an
energetic trot. Give him lots of praise, and a treat as soon as he gets it.
Once he understands and takes off beautifully, I stop our teaching session. I
don't want to bore him. If needed, I'll review it the week before a ride,
always praising for a great trot.

Good luck, hope this helps,

Nina Vasiliev
