[RC] OT: Your Mission, Should You Decide to Accept...(was: Disney movies) - Linda Marins

Cynthia and all, I was right there in front of the tv, especially for
horse or dog movies.....but I was later horrified to read (back in
70's), how much animal abuse there was in the 'Disney films,

If you are looking for something newer to get upset about, I've
got one for you:

On the SPIKE cable channel in May, they showed a 2004
martial arts movie made in China called "House of Flying
Daggers." During the battle scenes, they are clearly
 "tripping" horses.

For those who don't know, "tripping" horses is an old
movie wrangler stunt where you tie ropes to a horse's
front legs, anchor the other end of the rope in the ground,
the run the horse at full speed until it reaches the end
of the rope. The rope goes taut, the front legs are
jerked back under the horse, and the horse goes flying
tail over head in a visually exciting, catapulting somersalt.
Sometimes the horse gets up again. Sometimes it breaks
its neck and doesn't get up again. (To see multiple examples
of this, rent the old 60's Charlton Heston movie,
"Khartoum."

There was a very big stink about tripping horses in
the '70s. Although it was never made illegal, advocates
succeeded in getting the movie production--and more
importantly--the movie *distribution* industry to
voluntarily agree to never import or distribute a film
where horse tripping had been used.

The voluntary ban worked. (Newer movies like "Braveheart"
have used computer-graphic horses for the gory scenes.)
I haven't seen a horse tripped in a movie made since 1975's
"The Wind and the Lion. "

Until China's 2004 "House of Flying Daggers" on May 22,
2007 on the SPIKE channel.

So, anti-cruelty crusaders--go GET 'em.

Linda Marins
