Re: [RC] falling off the horse-long - Barbara McCrary

I had a gelding I adored and he and I were closely bonded. He was a terrific endurance horse, but he could blow 6 feet sideways without warning, and pull right out from under me. Having a low center of gravity :-)) I landed on my hip, first one, then the other. At my age I didn't need a broken hip. After the second time he dumped me, and several other near misses, I gave in to better judgment and sold him to my 14 year old granddaughter, who is fearless, has better balance, rides superbly, and bounces. He didn't spook in competition, but he would do so on training rides around home. Consequently, I was always on the defensive and he was always ready to find something to spook at...sometimes something as simple as a fern. I was dumped only twice in 3-1/2 years, but it was one time too many. It just wasn't fun and it didn't make sense, as far as my safety.

Subject: [RC] falling off the horse-long

My non-riding friends think I'm insane to want to ride, and my endurance friends are also beginning to wonder about me. Splendor does not have a mean bone in his body, but he is excitable.

Here are my questions:
1., how long before I can ride again (my other, non-spooky horse)? Do I just wait til it stops hurting too much?
2., anyone have any suggestions other than a velcro-butt graft?
3., how many times have you ridecampers fallen off a horse before you started questioning your sanity regarding that particular horse?
4., on average, how many times do you fall off per year?
