We have had horses over the years that were very hard to pulse with the 
hand.  My current horse is one of those.  Some of the horses had such strong 
heartbeats that you could almost hear them, and it was very easy to pulse 
them by hand.  It seems to depend on the individual horse, but yes, some of 
us still pulse by hand, if it is possible.
