[RC] doing an LD on hay only?? - Bagwell, Theresa

I have a friend who is thinking of doing an LD and only feeding hay.  I asked why and she said she couldn't get over to where her horse is every day for a few weeks prior to a ride to slowly add feed to his diet. She was afraid it would upset his system if she just decided to give it to him at the ride.  Has anyone successfully done a ride feeding only hay?  We are talking a slow conservative LD.  She also wondered about giving an ener-gel type of energy booster if his energy wanes later into the ride.

I hadn't ever tried it  before as my horse would probably kill me if I didn't give him his "ride food" (I think he is definitely in it for the grub)  :) So, She asked if I would put it out on ridecamp and see what you guys had to say.
