Re: [RC] re: ride vs. race - Truman Prevatt

I don't think anyone ever envisioned a treatment vet as one sitting around on his thumbs until there was a need. Normally it is exactly as you say - they are one of the ride vets but they are prepared to treat and that is their priority. It works well since normally the peak rush is over before any horse needs attention.

There was of course the Goethe ride in 1997 when the weather was very uncooperative (65 degrees at the start by 100% humidity in front of a line of thunderstorms moving in off the gulf) and the first three horses in the first check stretched out and peed black. That day we had two major tie ups, two minor ties ups and a couple cases of thumps and a couple colics. The riders felt cool but with the humidity the horses were cooking on the inside. The treatment vet was a very busy man as was the ride manager who kept driving to the UF vet school for more fluids and drugs. Both were up most of the night.

The good news is all the horses recovered to go on to long endurance careers thanks to good and timely care.

I don't think the treatment vet need be a different vet than the regular ride vet. The important thing is that there is a vet on-site that's licensed (and prepared) to treat a horse if needed (as recommended in AERC vet manual). It needn't be someone seperate only waiting around to treat. But it does make sense that a treatment take precedence over other ride duties if the need should arise.
