all the horses are wearing collars with an RFID chip - automatically sensed as they enter and leave (a sensor cable is buried in the sand at the arrival/departure gates). Timing is automatic and accurate. There's a similar cable at the pulse gate. Can't get more accurate... They're using handheld heartrate monitors at the vet gate. The pulse is flashed on a monitor at the end of the trotting lane for all to see. Very interesting to watch the pulses go up/down or down/down ... pretty revealing I suppose.
