Alcochette, Portugal: Today's 160-km FEI European Open Endurance Championship for the Qatar Challenge boasts of a strong line up that could very well pass off as that of a world championship.

While the five UAE riders in the 6-member team comprise a former world champion, two European Open champions, an Asian gold and bronze medalists and together have won over four team gold medals in the European Open Championship - starting off as the favourites.

The French are also represented by one of their strongest teams with reigning world team champions Virginie Atger on Kangoo D'aurabelle, Philippe Benoit on Akim Du Boulve and Pascale Dietsch on Hifrane Du Barthas back here with the same horses after their 2006 triumph.

Tough rivals

Adding to their might is 2002 World Team gold medal winner Jean Phillippe Frances on Hanaba Du Bois.

The Dubai-based Spaniard Jaume Punti Dachs is back on Elvis Ahb after their 4th place finish in the 2006 World Championship while Belgium's Kristel van den Abeele, European champion in 2005 is back to defend her title.

Bahrain's Shaikh Nasser Bin Hamad Al Khalifa is on Basic Instinct while Shaikh Duaij Bin Salman Al Khalifa on Shar Rushkin, both in the top 15 in Aachen, while Shaikh Nasser won the Asian silver medal in Doha last December.

The Swiss quartet of Anna Lena Wagner, Nora Wagner, Urs Wenger and Veronika Munger Jannik - silver medalist in 2005 Euros and silver medalist in 2006 World Championship are back with some of the same horses to spice up the chase for team honours.
