RE: [RC] EI Equine Influenza in Australia - Katie Hogg

That's right. Aussie isn't vaccinated and neither are we in NZ. Its most
likely it will reach here too, its only a matter of time. We are the
only two countries in the world with a large Equine population that have
never had EI and aren't vaccinated against it. Its going to cause havoc
as soon as it hits NZ just as it has caused problems in Australia. I
don't know why The Ministry of Agriculutre and Fisheries aren't taking
precutionary mesures and are making the vaccine avaliable to us.

Don Huston said:

Is this similar to the Rhino Flu we have here in America?

Rhino and Flu are two different types of viral diseases so there is no
such thing as "Rhino Flu." If you are asking about the recent spate of
the neurological form of Rhino that went through a few venues a number
of months ago, the answer is, "No, it is not similar except to the
extent that both Rhino and Flu are viral infections of the upper
respiratory tract."

Can we vaccinate for EI?

For some strains. There are both intramuscular and intranasal varieties
of vaccines for EI.

The FEI requires that horses be current on the EI vaccines to validate
FEI passports.
