Re: [RC] Jobs vs. Gates - Laney Humphrey

My very high level Sound/Technical Editor sister in law and high level graphic designer son both love their Macs. I took a grad level course years ago on computers in libraries. The lab had only macs and no one who could tutor us. I just got frustrated because, like you, I do best if someone shows me.
The video editing you're doing sounds like lots of fun. If this winter is a really rainy one (here's hoping!!!), I might have to borrow my video camera back from my daughter and play around with editing stuff. But then I might have to get a Mac!

In my classroom I have a Dell laptop that uses Microsoft, a G-4 Mac laptop and a G-5 Mac 20" screen desktop. I wish I had someone who was familiar with Macs to show me little "tricks" one by one, which is definitely the best way for me to learn my way around a computer. Every time I have had access to a support person and complained about something I needed to "right click" to do on the dell, but couldn't figure out how to do on the darned Mac the guy would show me the Mac way and it would be even easier. Problem is just not having anyone around to show me those ways. The kids are exposed to nothing but Microsoft in school and that's what they're going to grow up using. Mac folks would do well to train some seed mentors in schools.

The MAIN thing I use my macs for, and I use them a TON, is video editing.
It is absolutely addictive. I can video one of my horses trotting around
the field, download it, and move the video frame by frame, make still
shots, etc to analyze his gait or whatever. The farrier & I have watched
*exactly* how their feet are hitting the ground, you can get that perfect
ears up shot for a "horse for sale" ad, etc. etc. I make highlights
videos for all our sports teams, then a video for our Senior night where
I can take their old home movies from when they're kids and morph them
into the same kid playing baseball as a senior or whatever. I can burn
them to DVD's and sell for a low price which is one way I finance my Art
class. We have a regular "college recruitment video production lab" going
where I've taught the athletes how to collect their highlights, edit them
and send them to colleges they'd like to be recruited by. I absolutely
love doing this. We had another teacher who hated Macs and he showed me
that he was ordering a program for his Dell that would be far better than
my i-movie...but he ended up never having any luck at all with it.

I want to learn CS-2 the art programs to pass that on to my students but
I just don't have the time...or the mentor so far.

Biggest problem we have with the macs is just compatibility when the
students need to work on a project in one room... "Can I borrow your
computer to type this Mrs. McGhee?" then they don't finish it, try to
take it to the next class and things get screwy when they switch over to
the Microsoft. I also prefer to do my Powerpoint programs on my Dell
since the projector people at most conferences have a terrible time
messing up the Mac presentations.
