RE: [RC] quarter crack in front hoof and now horizontal cracks - Sheila A. Walsh

Dear Ridecampers,

If there is a shoer among you, can I pick your brain?

I am using a nice mare and she has a quarter crack on her inside front, and
now I am seeing horizontal cracks developing on the insides of both front
feet. She's being shod by the owner's shoer, but now that I have moved, I
plan to use a new farrier. I need to understand what might be happening
here.

I am not in the habit of telling a farrier how to do his/her job. I just
want to be able to have an intelligent conversation about her feet. They
are all white, if that makes any difference.

Tia,

sheila

Subject: [RC] Electrolytes

A nice article on electrolytes and their use. Especially liked the
explanation in the paragraph titled "Maintaining Fluid Balance During
Work," that differentiates the sweat of humans from that of horses, and
why horses may need electrolytes to keep the thirst mechanism intact. Dr Q
