RE: Re: [RC] Drugs v. bullet - heidi

Indeed, the drugs do affect different animals in different ways.  Not all chemical euthanasias are as "clean" as one might like.

In addition, the most commonly-used drugs (barbiturates) are very toxic to other animals that might accidentally consume some of the carcass--particularly birds.  Where I live, the vets will no longer euthanize a horse with traditional barbiturates unless you have a hole already dug and a backhoe standing by.  That often isn't possible, particularly in the winter.

Sorry to inform you but there is a percentage that do not go down well, same drugs. This gelding was sedated but it did not work on him as it does on most. She spent $250 on this boy. The vet was very apologetic but did say that it happens no matter what, it does happen. As he said, he would prefer it not to have happened with the horse who's owner wanted to stay with him. The gelding was not in any pain that we could tell, just galloping while on his side.  A bullet is quick, cheap and as pain free as anything that ends ones life in seconds. .
