Re: [RC] [RC] Tevis--Stagg Newman & Last Chance to Deadwood Leg - TypeF \(Jackie Floyd\)

I have to say that's funny, but I know it's not funny to crews at the time. All it takes is one wrong number off. We don't get rider names, only numbers. I got a little frusted in the morning because the radio operators kept giving me duplicate numbers. Every time I punched in one that was already IN somewhere, or OUT somewhere, it was ding at me and I'd have to go run down the number and see how long ago it was in the database. Sometimes the dups were exact dups. Sometimes there were totally wrong numbers. One time they handed me an entire page of 20 riders that were exact duplicates. Some poor tired radio operator at some stop obviously thought he hadn't transmitted that sheet yet.

It makes one worry that they've missed a rider number completely when they can't go back and tell me it was really rider 91 instead of 61 or something. All I can do is hope that everyone is accounted for at the end of the night. Both years, so far, we only had one rider to account for and both instances, there was someone in the room that had the answer, either from vet cards that came in or horse transport records.

Everybody has to remember that the webcast is still a fairly new thing and REALLY NICE to have to follow the race, but there wasn't one for the majority of the years of this ride. The webcast is also a great help to the managers of this ride during the race, but it definitely NOT gospel and if there is a question about something, we always go back to the vet cards that have the official times on them.

So remember to take what you see on the posted webcast vetcheck reports with a grain of salt.

:) Jackie

Yes it can and does happen that there are communication errors..the website showed me getting pulled at Last Chance (50 miles), then showing up at the River Crossing at 88 miles...I know I was singing Steve Miller's "Fly like an Eagle"...but that would be some flight down the canyon!

More likely a typo, probably. Remember, the webcast is, after all, an unofficial record of what happened. The real times get put in later at the office after the vet cards are tallied. The amount of mistakes that can happen from an in/out timer, telling a radio person, who then makes a list, and then radios it to net control for yet another person to make a list, who then gives it to my husband, who then reads it to me who types it .... well ... anything could happen! Although we all try to be as correct about it as we can.

So you'll just have to wait until the official results get posted. That might be a few months from now, by the time the office gets done with it.

Subject: [RC] Super's numbers??

Just crunching numbers waiting for update.

1st place, Keele left Last Chance at 12:21 and arrived at Deadwood at
1:34 that's 73 min.

John Crandell left Last Chance at 12:27 and arrived at Deadwood at 1:35
that's 68 min.

Stagg left Last Chance at 12:45 and arrived at Deadwood in the lead at
1:05...20 minutes???? Is that right?

...Would that have to be a typo or is it possible to do that in 20 minutes?

Did we ever find out if Super's figures were a typo? I've got to believe that one
of the figures, either Newman's departure time or his arrival time, is a typo.
This says Newman went these 5 miles, the steepest up-and-down part of
the course, at a 15mph pace and passed 7 horses on a narrow single track
trail, when even the two leaders went at <5mph.

(See both the Tevis elevation map, Last Chance to Deadwood, with
swinging bridge in the middle:
 http://www.foothill.net/tevis/webcast07/elevation.htmp
and Lucy Chaplin Trumbull's pre-ride photos at
 http://www.quacky.co.uk/%7eelsie/RF-FH-Tevis-preride/).

If it is a typo, what were the real departure and arrival time numbers? Did Newman
actually arrive at Deadwood first, even if not *that* fast? (That Newman is listed as
arriving first means nothing if the time is a typo--it is just computer sorted by arrival
time, and if you get the wrong number, the system displays the wrong order.)

I'm interested because I'm curious whether Newman saw this slowest part of
the course as the best opportunity to make up time, and just overdid a tiny bit,
or whether he took it slow just like everybody else and all I'm looking at is
data GIGO.
