[RC] injecting hocks/sore hocks - joslyn

Hi: Hoping for some advice/guidance from Ridecampers.
I have a 10 year old Paso Fino gelding that I have been competing for 4
years, 3 years of slow LDs. Last year back to back rides of over 600 miles.
He finished every ride great. So what's the problem? :)
I started riding him on 50's this year, using Easyboots. He has completed 3
rides(over 9 hours each). He was pulled at a ride in mid-June for right
hind lameness. I did notice some swelling in the right hind so I layed him
up for 2 weeks. Started riding again, he seemed fine. Weekly mileage of
about 30-40 miles. I had started asking for more speed on training rides.
Came back from a training ride of 12 miles and noticed he seemed a bit short
on the right hind. :(
I had a vet look at him this morning. He said that he is sore in the hock.
He recommends injecting both hocks with cortisone(long acting).

My question/s -
Anyone using Easyboots strictly for competition? Should I be using the
boots on all training rides to acclimate his legs to the added weight?
Opinions/recommendations regarding injecting both hocks with cortisone?
Thanks,
Joslyn
