RE: [RC] [RC] [RC]FEI determination of abuse - Kelly Lane

Quote from Dr. Kent Allen (http://www.vaequine.com/staff.php) in the FEI report:

"In my experience the injury of the nature that Le Samurai suffered at the Lexington Three-Day Event is very rare in the sport of eventing. Accordingly, event riders are simply not experienced with the situation when a horse breaks down in this manner, which is much more common in the sport of horse racing."
We had a horse break down badly in a point-to-point last year, whilst in the lead and going very strongly after only 1 circuit of the course (just over 1mile). The jockey was a 17 year old lad with less than 20 races under his belt, and NEVER had a horse break down under him. He realised immediately that something was wrong and managed to pull up in about the same space AT had between LS breaking down and the last fence.

Now someone tell me how someone with only 1 season of competition under his belt and with no experience of such injuries can tell when the horse is not right and pull up even though the horse is not even remotely tired, pulling hard and probably not feeling any pain due to adrenalin, and someone like AT with 30 years experience can't even tell the difference between a severe breakdown and a slipped boot.

I do believe that in the case of AT, the injury happened at the point LS stumbled and even if she had pulled up he probably would still have been put down, but that will never be proven either way and it doesn't excuse her for continuing when he was quite clearly not right."

hmmm.....guess dr. allen is being too harsh as well.

i noticed that AT whipped the horse several times to keep him moving when he kept slowing up after the initial injury. i guess the 47 lame steps weren't enough warning.

yep-could happen to anyone i suppose. ;)
