I use an ear/neck covering with the brand name Bug Out on it.  My friend got 
them on the internet a few years ago.  They are the best if you have tough 
bugs like we do.  It covers from the nose up and then down the neck with 
velcro under the face, two on the neck then straps that clip to the front of 
your saddle.  It is a very light weight mesh that the horses can see 
through.  Try to find them, they are great.
