[RC] teaching horses to pony - Smith, Dave

I have a seven month old Arab filly that I’d like to teach to pony as I begin conditioning my mustang  in the coming months for our first LDs and competition.  Since I’m a newbie and never ponied before, I’d appreciate some advice.  I’d like to know the following:  at what age should I wait before teaching her to pony?  What is the trail distance I should limit her to the first year?  I expect to do the initial training of both the filly and the mustang in my round pen.  What techniques should I use to assure that my mustang doesn’t fear ponying the filly?  What can I do to assure her safety so he doesn’t kick back at her?  Are there any written or video references you might suggest on teaching horses to pony?  What have I forgotten to ask?  Thanx for your help.
