RE: [RC] [RC] Pacing & gelding - Ranelle Rubin

Angie, when do we get to see a picture of him????

I had a visiting horse, Sam Can Count who was previously owned by Barry Waite and was quite successful in endurance here a few weeks ago to do some pre-riding of the Tevis trail..he was one fine piece of horse flesh!! He was a Samtyr grandson...

..I agree totally and what I neglected to mention is that
> some of those "pacey" bloodlines are definitely the ones to avoid.

Was chatting with vet who was out to geld 7 today (Yeah!) and he started
talking about the Standardbred racing farm that used to be down the road
(big deal farm in its day, stallion "Steady Star" set world record) He
said it seemed those horses were never just lame in one place, it was
always two...not so much the pacers though. Do ya'll just dislike the
pace because it's not as smooth as the singlefoot? Is it worse than a
trot? Am I the only one who ever read "Oklahoma Pacer" in their school
library?

By the way, when he gelded 7 he tried to show me thickening scar tissue
where the testicles had been damaged at some time, probably kicked (bet
that hurt) or something and he doubted he would have been fertile. All
that trouble for the poor horse to be kept a stallion for nothing, glad
we put an end to that. Managed to trim his feet while he was knocked out.
Doesn't have quite the platter feet I'd feared. :-)

I hung a pretty powerful fan up to blow across his stall to keep the
flies off him. None of my others like it directly on them and avoid it.
He walks over and stands with his nose reaching up to the fan and just
lets it whip his mane around. I think Jody calls it the "Hamster in the
wind" look? (I didn't see Dr. Dolittle"). This week I think I'll just see
how much crap I can throw in his stall for him to get used to. Walking on
a tarp, piece of plywood, etc. He can learn about that while he's sore I
recon. :-)

Angie
