Re: [RC] World's worst conformation horse - Dot Wiggins

In most states that have brand laws, cattle brand figures are required to be 4" minimum on grown cows. Most folks do have full size iron, and a "calf" iron. They are usually 2" figures, and this is what often goes on any horse, neat, clear, and it'll bring him home.

If an animal is branded in its early months and the branding iron is a full-sized one, as the animal grows, so does the brand...into a huge brand. We use two different sized branding irons on our cattle...a full-sized one for full-sized cattle and a smaller one for calves. The only time we use the full-sized one is on mature bulls we may buy. They usually have their breeder's brand on them, but if we don't put OUR brand on them, as well, we have to have proof that we bought them from the previous owner before we can sell them. Otherwise we're in trouble. We always brand our yearly calf crop with the small iron. By the time they are mature animals, the brand has expanded to a full-sized one. It does help to have a brand big enough to see at a distance.
