[RC] early training tips, please - Moriah Nickerson

Hi all,
I am looking for advice on the best way to take an inexperienced 5 yo
and get him used to "spookies" out on the trail. my gelding is green
broke, and in the ring, we're working on bending and balancing. On
the trails he does BIG spooks, like a big spin at a rock, then he'll
walk on by. He's very eager to please and inquisitive, which helps,
and I want him to be happy and enjoy himself. How can I help him get
over these "moments" so we have a more enjoyable ride? What have
people done in the past to work younger horses out on the trail?

Also, for conditioning, how much ring work v. trails do people like to
do? I can usually ride 3-4 times a week, only able to take longer
trail rides on weekends.

My goals are being able to ride alone on local trails and to try an LD
or local ride this summer. I just want to be safe, and have fun with
him!
thanks!
moriah
